Small Press Day 2019!

With the big day looming, we thought we'd like to share with you the fantastic event that BAM! is part of this year, and that is Small Press Day 2019!

For the past few years they have been helping creators, venues and comic stores shine a light on the indie and small press and we are super proud to be part of this years festivities!

If you don't know what small press day is, then allow this simple pie chart to tell you why this is important...

In their own words...

What is small press and what is Small Press Day?

“Small press” encompasses the worlds of self-publishing, DIY culture and micropublishing – work produced and published either by individuals, creative collectives or smaller boutique publishers. Small Press Day exists to provide a focused occasion to celebrate that scene and those practitioners who work within it across the UK and Ireland. It’s designed as an event that requires minimal organisation for everyone involved but will ultimately be hugely rewarding for shops, creators and the small press community.

What are the aims of Small Press Day for creators?

It’s a chance for creators to be the focus of their local shop, meet readers, talk about their work with potential new audiences, sign their comics and take part in workshop-style panels. Small press sections are already a thriving part of many shops but on Small Press Day we support the community side of the scene by bringing together shops, artists, activists and readers in one big party-style celebration!

Click on the link under this awesome Akira-inspired poster to find out more about Small Press Day and where you can find an event in your area (if you're too far away from BAM! of course :D)!

BAM.... and the line up is Complete!

They think it's all over... well it isn't yet, because we've got another round of exhibitors to announce! That's right, even more brilliant indie creators are coming to Bath on July 13th!!

Make sure you get there to see them and their great work!

Rik Jackson will be selling the first two issues of his Sci-Fi private detective comic Heads! The third issue is due to hit Kickstarter in July. He will also be bringing copies of his heavy metal horror comedy strip Rock In Purgatory.

Kat Himmel is Curious Thing, a nosy parker who loves a good old portraiture/history mash-up. She plucks radical-but-obscure figures from the annals of time & brings their faces to life for a contemporary audience - although, it’s sometimes about more familiar faces whose political exploits aren’t as well known.

Kat’s illustrated for Topic.com & Little White Lies magazine - well, those are her finest moments, anyway. She has an insatiable appetite for music, cinema, feminism, politics & French culture, so come & buy her ‘Rad Femmes’ booklet or her ‘Vegan Heroes’ tea towel. There’ll be some postcards & other surprises weighing down the table, too. It’d be lovely to go home empty-handed.

Joseph Simons will be selling pin badges (some political, others less controversial!) and zines (ranging from one made from old VHS covers, to an old school style analog zine). He also makes keyrings out of toy parts!

Using every means possible from screen print, collage to 3D photography I generally try to make the mundane interesting. With an almost obsessive love of old print media. Misaligned printing and half tones on recycled paper is a passion!

Just when you think our line up of amazing creators couldn't get any better, we announce MORE! Check out this final batch of great exhibitors joining us on July 13th!

Lise Richardson is an illustrator and designer, currently based in Bath. She makes zines about comedy festivals, folk horror, and other very specific things. Stuart Goldsmith of The Comedian’s Comedian Podcast once described her as a " wonderful and niche artist", which might influence you one way or the other.

Mach Zine 2019, documenting the Machynlleth Comedy Festival, will be available at BAM for the first time, as well as a brand new collection of daily diary comics. Her table will also be stocked with her full back catalogue of zines, cards, and other oddities.

Mondo Comix is the fever dream creation of the disembodied brain, Doctor Mondo. Collaborating with artist Andrew Richmond and some of the best underground writers in the land, they have successfully published 2 horror comics in 2019. The relaunch of cult heroine Octobriana and the folk horror comic Greyborough. With two more titles coming in 2019, a horror anthology and a creator owned anthology.

Keep watching the skies.

Lily Sockmonkey is not a real sockmonkey, but sometimes wishes she was. She likes zines, comics, sci-fi movies and John Thaw. BAM! is her first time as an exhibitor, but she’s been to lots of small press events and knows what’s what, so don’t try anything funny.

Lily will be selling copies of her first two zines “12 Badly Drawn Pictures Of Kurt Russell” and “Badly Drawn Streets Of Fire”. She’s hard at work on her next project, but you’re gonna have to wait for that one.

Lily has a supportive, wonderful, and devastatingly handsome husband who may have helped a bit with this bio.

Siân is an illustrator, comic artist and designer based in Cardiff. She began creating comics in 2012 with her first series, The Book of Fey which launched as a web-comic, before moving on to work as an illustrator as well as a comic artist in late 2014. Since then she has released multiple books and comics, successfully launching and fully funding a Kickstarter campaign in 2018 for her latest graphic novel, Overlord. She is currently expanding her skills into creative and graphic design as well as working on her next graphic novel!

For BAM! this year, I'll be selling copies of my latest book, Overlord, as well as copies of my short graphic novel Soosh! I'll also be promoting my upcoming project, Soosh Vs Everything and selling some super cute prints to boot!

I will be selling an Illustrated T-shirt. This illustration was created using only typographyIt is a concrete poetry illustration, and for this self-portrait, I decided to only use the letters of my name r-i-t-a. I will also have two zines:

Concrete Monday zine - a concrete poetry booklet inspired on the weekly routine tasks of an ordinary Monday in my life. This booklet was produced during my second year living away from home (Portugal) while studying in Bath. With the use of typography, I have created a series of 12 illustrations – alarm, breakfast, getting dressed, brush, toilet, work, lunch, wash dishes,
dinner, shower, brush, and sleep.

67 Highstreet zine - This was inspired in my household during my third year of university. We
were paying the price of gold for a house that didn't work, was old, dirty and with constant appliances breaking down. This zine has illustrations to each division of the house (rooms
kitchen living room, bathrooms and outdoor area).
